■ Lee è nato a Hoeryong, Hamgyeong settentrionale, ora parte della Corea del Nord. Quando aveva 4 anni, la sua famiglia si trasferì a Seoul, dove vivevano i nonni di Lee. Suo padre aveva un'impresa di produzione e vendita di saponi.
■ Lee è cresciuto nel quartiere di Ahyeon-dong e si è diplomato alla scuola superiore di Seoul e laureato in Filosofia alla Seoul National University.
■ Lee è stato anche un membro dell'Assemblea Nazionale della Corea del Sud.
